Pyrgadikia

pyrgadikia2It is a coastal, very pretty fishing village, built amphitheatrically on the little peninsula between Sithonia and Athos. Many archaeologists assume that this is the location, where the ancient town Piloros was built. There are remainders of a Byzantine castle among the village's houses. The whole area, with the olive groves and the large fields around the village belonged since the 11 th century AC to the Monastery Dohiariou and was named Pyrgadikia. This name survived till today. The estate was given to the refugees from Asia Minor , who came here in 1922 and built the new village.
